A thoracic surgeon is a doctor who specialises in chest surgery, i.e. in treating diseases and conditions of the internal organs located in the chest, such as the lungs and the trachea. A thoracic surgeon treats congenital defects and the consequences of injuries to the chest organs. Thoracic surgeons perform both traditional open operations and endoscopic operations. They treat cancers such as lung cancer, oesophageal cancer, thymoma, thymic carcinoma, tumours of the chest wall and others.
IMPORTANT! A thoracic surgeon also carries out diagnostic work-up of cancers of the chest. This includes bronchoscopy, mediastinoscopy, biopsy of lung tumours through the chest wall, and biopsy of chest wall tumours.
