What does a general surgeon do?

A general surgeon treats diseases and injuries in various parts of the body that require surgical intervention. General surgeons very often perform difficult cancer operations, frequently as life-saving procedures, and are important members of the team responsible for diagnosing and treating patients with malignant tumours.

At the first appointment, the surgeon takes a detailed medical history to assess the patient's health and rule out contraindications to surgery, followed by a physical examination to locate the disease or injury that needs treatment.

The range of general surgery procedures includes hernia repair, removal of skin and subcutaneous lesions (moles, lipomas), bowel surgery, breast procedures, thyroid surgery and the treatment of injuries, including laparoscopic techniques that allow a faster recovery. After surgery, the surgeon provides post-operative care and works with other specialists to ensure comprehensive care for the patient.
