Radiologist
National Institute of Oncology (NIO), Gliwice — Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging
A radiologist is a doctor who specialises in diagnosing diseases using imaging methods such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound (US). Radiology helps in the early detection and treatment of many diseases, including cancer.
Radiologists interpret images and write reports on which other doctors base their diagnosis and treatment planning. In cancer treatment, precise reports and comparison with previous scans are particularly important.
Radiologists also perform fine- and core-needle biopsies of tumours guided by ultrasound, mammography or CT, and some of them specialise in interventional radiology, e.g. embolisation of tumours.
