What does a thoracic surgeon do?

A thoracic surgeon is a doctor who specialises in chest surgery, i.e. the treatment of diseases of the organs in the chest, such as the lungs and trachea. They treat congenital defects and the consequences of injuries to the chest organs, performing both open and endoscopic operations.

Thoracic surgeons treat conditions including lung cancer, oesophageal cancer, thymoma and thymic carcinoma, as well as tumours of the chest wall.

Important: a thoracic surgeon also carries out diagnostic work-up for cancers of the chest. Procedures include bronchoscopy, mediastinoscopy, transthoracic biopsy of lung tumours and biopsy of chest wall tumours.
