Haematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of blood diseases — disorders of the production, destruction or function of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
A haematologist makes a diagnosis based on a detailed medical history and laboratory tests, including a full blood count, coagulation tests and bone marrow biopsy. Haematological diseases range from iron-deficiency anaemia to malignancies such as leukaemias and lymphomas.
Depending on the disease, treatment includes oral medication, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, blood transfusions and haematopoietic stem cell (bone marrow) transplantation. A haematologist works with oncologists, radiation oncologists and pathologists, and also conducts clinical trials of new drugs.
